About SPACE Youth Theatre
-
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS! -
SPACE Youth Theatre was established by
Nand Cassily in 1999. Since then, the Youth Theatre has seen several
hundred British Forces youngsters perform on stage in feature musicals
such as “Charlie & the Chocolate Factory” & “Bugsy Malone”, and more
recently in their Showcase work including "Jack & the Beanstalk" and
"Nathan's Nightmare". The youngsters have also starred in adult
productions such as “Joseph”, “Oliver” and the annual pantomime, as well
appearing in concerts at Ancient Curium, BARC fete and other charity
events. The senior group have also performed at the annual Rosebowl Drama
Festival. In 2008, the Youth Theatre were awarded the Rosebud Trophy for
the most effective piece of drama for under-18's with their adaptation of
"Sing When You're Winning" by Mark Rees. The Youth Theatre were also
awarded the Waistcoat Trophy for best set.
SPACE Youth Theatre currently has about 100
budding actors and actresses from school years FS1 through to 11, who take
part in weekly workshops to learn about all aspects of the theatre,
including stage craft, improvisation, role play and general theatre
etiquette. There are also sessions in rhythm & movement, singing & voice,
theatrical makeup & face painting. The senior members can also learn how
the theatre works behind the scenes, from lighting & sound to stage
management, and other essential theatre skills.
The Youth Theatre performs
a Showcase of their work throughout the year, open to family and
friends of the Youth Members. Each Showcase includes a range of drama,
singing and dancing from all age groups encompassing a wide level of
abilities.
Nand and her helpers are vetted to work
with children and have a broad range of experiences, theatre skills and
qualifications. They welcome students of all levels of ability, and pride
themselves on their excellent reputation.
"The Youth Theatre sessions help
youngsters to express themselves, gain self-confidence and stage presence
through participation in drama games, mime, music and movement. Drama is
an excellent way to address social issues and enable children to express
their frustrations and confusions and perhaps help to understand and cope
with various situations they may encounter. Drama is a wonderful aid to
teaching children communication and socialising skills. It is also lots of
FUN!" [top]

Extra Curricular
Opportunities for Youth Theatre Members
When a SPACE
production requires children to take part (for example the annual pantomime
which takes place in January / February each year), the junior cast is
often auditioned and selected from Youth Theatre members by the
production's Director. Due to the large number of children
involved with Youth Theatre, and alternative competition, it is not possible for all children to be involved.
Children are selected according to their aptitude and appropriateness
for each particular production.
Youth Members have participated in many adults productions
at SPACE including SPACE pantomimes, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat", "Now
That's What I Call Music!", "Music
of the Night", and "Oliver!" the musical.
Several members have also starred in one-act plays that have been selected to be performed at the annual Rosebowl Drama Festival at St John's School in Episkopi, held every May.
Youth Members have also taken part in many charity concerts and community
events such as BARC Fetes, the Lions' "Musical Spectacular" concerts at Ancient Curium, and many more.
